2008 Tesouro Tannat

Originally native to the Basque region of France, Tannat is the principal grape of the Madiran Region in the foothills of the French Pyrenees. Tannat is also grown in California and Uruguay. In Uruguay, Tannat was introduced by Basque settlers in the 19th century, and is now the most important red grape varietal, just as Malbec is the signature red grape of Argentina and Carmenere is important in Chile. We produced 7 barrels (150 cases) of the 2008. The wine is 98% Tannat and 2% Petite Syrah. Alcohol is 14.3%. The winemaker describes it as "luscious, with notes of mixed wild berries, black cherry, sweet tannins with a long finish." It is a full bodied wine, excellent on its own and a wonderful complement to hearty foods.
